Dad, can you take me to a football match please………………..and that’s how it all started!
My 9 year old son was desperate to go to a football match, and as it would have been his first time I wanted somewhere small and friendly, and so on a Tuesday evening in October we arrived at The Silverlake Stadium. Alfie was understandably excited as was full of enthusiasm.
In the team that evening was Adam Dugdale, who I knew from his playing days at Crewe Alexandra, and Alf asked if he wore his Crewe shirt did I think Duggy would sign it, I said I’m sure he would.
Anyway, the players came out to warm up and we called Duggy over to see if he would sign the shirt, not only did he do this but he also had his photo taken with Alf – I now had one very happy son!!!
We sat down in the Mackoy stand ad got ready to watch the game. What a game it was, and to make things even better it was a 3-0 win for The Spitfires.
After the match we went to the clubhouse for a drink and managed to have a good chat with Duggy and some of the other players, and so Alf’s love affair with Eastleigh FC started.
We only missed a couple of home games for the rest of the season and Alf experienced the highs and lows of the FA Cup with visits to both Swindon and Brentford.
He was mascot at the Woking game and thoroughly enjoyed that day, not only did he get to meet all the players, but he went into the dressing room and even had a kick about on the pitch!
I think I can safely say that we will have a longtime supporter of the club in this little man, and we have already got our season tickets for next year, also it just goes to show what a fantastic family orientated club Eastleigh FC are, as we have always been made to feel welcome every time we go.
So, if anyone is thinking about introducing their child to a football game, then I would strongly recommend that it’s done “The Eastleigh Way”!
